I couldn’t agree with you more. Wonder if you’ve ever seen Alan Bennett’s The History Boys? It illustrates your point - two teachers - one teaching the boys to think and feel and learn ‘by heart’. The other to help them pass Oxbridge entrance exams!

Love that film and all it tells us about education and also funny but heartbreakly sad at the end 💙

It really is but well worth it because of the lesson it teaches us!!

Resonated with your sentence: “The world doesn’t need any more people pretending that things aren’t that serious, that beautiful, that profound, that tragic, or that hilarious.” Thank you for that reminder.

Thank you for this. As a fellow overthinker who loves to dive deep into books and plays and who spent 3 decades as a teacher, I salute your commitment.

My husband’s grandma was a career English teacher, she died 2 months after we got married 12 years ago and I have loved getting to know her better through her writing. She tried to get all 7 of her grandkids to appreciate the value of reading, but I keep hearing that I am the most like her. My kids have always performed well in school and I did too, but I hope I can impart to them that reading and writing have always helped me to make sense of my life and understand others too.

Thanks for putting all of this into words! I see this in my high schoolers all the time, but what we need is them to be living like Anne of Green Gables!

Absolutely incredible article! One of the best I’ve read as completely agree with what I received from my English teacher all those years back and here she is, back in my life, encouraging me to read:

Robert Macfarlane

Proust

Mary Oliver

And much more…

Such a blessing to be immersed in books which allow the reader to overthink! They are the best ones!

I am going to send this article to her. She will love it!
